We operate on a Direct Trade coffee model built on strong relationships. Some of the ways we hold ourselves to these coffee sourcing standards:
We meet with farmers, visit their farms and maintain an open, communicative relationship based on a feedback loop.
We work directly with the farmers to set sustainable purchase agreements that ensure economically viable futures
We honor the farmers by learning their stories and sharing them with others. We also try to make it possible for them to visit us.
We always pay farmers well above the Fair Trade standard for their coffee.
SUSTAINABLE BUSINESS PRACTICES
We are proud to be Oregon’s first B Corp Certified coffee roaster (disclaimer: certified by B Lab in 2019). Some of the ways we practice our sustainability:
Purchasing 100% renewable energy for our facilities and looking for ways to reduce energy
Reducing our roasting energy and emissions output by over 85% compared to a standard coffee roaster by using Loring Smart Roast machines
Implementing an extensive waste reduction program and striving to recycle and compost everything we can.
We educate and nudge our staff, customers and suppliers toward the goal of Zero Waste
COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT
Fostering a thriving community is a natural extension of Nossa Familia’s roots. Some of the programs we have sponsored include:
Partnering with p:ear to help mentor homeless and transitional youth by offering an 8-week barista course
Assisting with evaluating, sourcing and roasting coffee for Central City Coffee, which assists homeless women, primarily single mothers, in the path toward self-sufficiency.
Donating 50 cents for every bag of Full Cycle sold to the Community Cycling Center and the Street Trust, which are local organizations that work to improve bicycle infrastructure and safety
